AFF VS. CLASSICAL SCHOOLING
The eternal question is: Why AFF and not Static line or IAD, which are much cheaper? Below is a comparison of these methods:
AFF method | Classical method ( Static line and IAD) |
The First jump course: Theory and 8 jumps (from a height of 4000 meters , accompanied by two instructors ). The student is independent in free fall after seven jumps. | The First jump course: theory and 3 jumps (from a height of 1000m, after exit the canopy opens automatically). The student is independent in free fall after about thirty jumps. |
Student acquires all the necessary knowledge already in this First jump course. | In this First jump course the student doesn’t get to independent jumps from 4000 meters (training continues but after first three jumps you have to pay for each additional jump ) Slow progress continues after the course. It starts with solo deployments from 1200m and then slowly the student advances to higher altitudes while he gathers the experience alone (no instructor in free-fall). |
First solo jump from 4000m (13000ft) after 2 days of jumping (without instructor ) | For the first solo jump from an altitude of 4000m a student typically takes several months (because there is no help of an instructor in free-fall). |
Individual approach instructor – student. ( Intensive preparation for each jump one on one, assistance in free-fall , correction of errors ) Instructor records the free fall , video debrief and correction immediately after the jump. | The group approach one instructor-multiple students ( the instructor on the ground shows the correct exit of the aircraft , the students are on their own when they jump , the instructor is unable to correct their mistakes ). It’s only possible to record exits from the plane, the student falls too fast out of view and the errors are not always visible on the video. |
Students feel safe in free-fall with the constant presence of an instructor (relaxed state of mind leads to faster progress ). | Students are often under stress because they are left to themselves during the jumps. |
Due to the speed and instructing one on one 100 % of students successfully complete AFF training and continue jumping. | Many students give up during the course, due to slow and often stressful way of training . Only about 30 % of students get a license. |
